280 days of the beer journey. Month by month.
Field. Brewery. Pub. Barley and hops are grown in the fields -this is where the flavour of the beer begins. In the malting houses, barley is transformed into malt, and in the brewery, the beer goes through brewing, fermentation, and maturation. Finally, it is packaged into barrels, bottles, or tanks and delivered to pubs and restaurants.
April: Hops begin to grow and seek their direction
In the fields, the first fresh green rows of barley are appearing, and hop gardens are entering one of the most important phases of the season – training the bines onto wires. As a climbing plant, hops need proper support, so farmers carefully guide the young shoots onto trellis wires to help them grow upwards.
At this stage, the plants rapidly gain strength and therefore require regular monitoring as well as sufficient moisture. Over the course of a single season, one plant can consume up to around 800 liters of water. It is right now that the quality and strength of the next chapter in the journey of beer are being decided.
